Music Video for Bastille - Of The Night

Bastille Poster

For our Magazine Poster Advertisement, we used a still from our official music video, the image which we chose carefully was the still of him walking through the graveyard, we felt it was a strong image which matches the conventions of indie music and also Bastille's Music. In our opinion this image sticks with the conventions of Bastille as Bastilles Posters, Digipaks, Videos and just the music is really dark and has a surreal edge to it which we wanted to achieve. The font we chose on dafont.com is very similar with Indie Font and also Bastille's use of font, the font was called 'market deco' by using a similar font it demonstrates that we were wanting to use similar conventions. However, we decided to use a bright font, which some Indie bands we have researched into such as Arcade Fire, Bastille and One Republic have chose to use plain colours, but as we have already used dark colours on our digipak and posters imagery we wanted the font to stand out against these colours, so this slightly played against the genre.

Final Music Video Plan (Bastille Of The Night)

Our Final idea for our Music Video, follows the similar idea of death in Bastilles Official Music Video for 'Of the Night'. We decided to stick with that idea after analysing the lyrics to the song and seing that the song may have an upbeat feel to it, but the lyrics are actually really deep, mostly about losing someone you love; 'Feel you give me love again' which we all decided is about wanting someone back after losing them, just wanting to feel them again. So after group decisions we decided to chose a broken hearted love story, about a young adult whos girlfriend has passed away and he can't get stop thinking about it. Bastille's music videos such as Pompeii and Laura Palmer all have a surreal feel to the video such as Death and the supernatural. So we decided to keep that similar feel to our music video plan, so considering that in the story his girlfriend has passed away, every place that he visits in memory of her she is going to appear and then disappear which is very supernatural and has a ghostly feel. The Music video will start with him standing at a grave yard looking at her grave with flowers, where it will say on the screen Bastille of the night. The whole video is going to be the journey of the young boy going to places that remind him of her, and the struggle of not having her around anymore, the changes it has had on his life. Which there are thousands of people that lose people they love every day so  music video showing that will work well. He will then go on to a river where they went once, a place they used to relax at a cricket pitch in the summer, and also just being at home together messing around with one another, in a young couple manner.

Bastille - Of The Night

The official music video for ‘Of the night’ – Bastille, shows a very dark narrative which tackles a taboo subject of people giving up and committing suicide and just other deaths, which the detective shown has to witness and see. The video starts with a long tracking shot through a tunnel in a road which leads the viewers into the journey of the detective of what he is about to see, as after the title shown ‘Bastille of the night’ it then shows a mid-shot of the detective in his car driving to the scene, which is where we see we are on a journey with this person, because as soon as the car turns in and you see the flashing beacons and crime scene tape I noticed straight away this would be a dark music video with quite a strong narrative about death. I feel the meaning of this video is about giving up on life, as a lot of the dead bodies shown are linked to suicide, however a lot are murder but the majority seemed to be suicide, such as the ones with the pills next to the bed, the one with the knife in the hand and also the detective at the end. The main idea of why people do commit suicide is because they have given up on life and they can’t deal with the pain anymore, which links to the lyrics in the song ‘I can ease you of your pain’ – is this suggesting that death can ease the pain of people suffering from depression. At the end of the music video it shows the detective has a knife in his hand and has killed himself, is this again easing his pain of all of the horrific crime scenes he has had to witness in his life and he cant deal with it anymore, the beginning leads us in to his journey of what he has to see and then the end of the music video shows the end of his life, which is really dark. ‘There’ll be nothing left for me to yearn’ which is a sign of the main person the detective slowly going in to depression saying there’s nothing left for him to do as there have been so many deaths he has witnessed.  This music video is similar to other Bastille videos as they usually have a strong narrative which is linked to death, such as Pompeii which is about a historic event which took the lives of many people.
‘Of the night’ shows the supernatural, as it shows the dead bodies miming to the music when they are dead, which is very surreal and gives quite a depressing feel to the music video. Usually in Bastilles music videos Dan the main singer is the main person through out it, but in this he is shown briefly for 2 seconds. This is because the band are possibly trying to achieve a more cinematic feel to the video. The editing in this video is really fast paced, it gets quicker towards the end which matches the story and how the Detective is ready to go. This fast paced editing matches the rhythm of the music.

Music Video Survey Research Results

Q1+2, 94% of the 37 people who answered our survey were between the ages of 16-24. By this being the highest percentage of the age group we know the answers for the rest of the questions are what a young group of people thing, so we know that our research has been answered by a younger audience of people who are interested in music. This helps us as we are wanting to have a target audience in this age group. So reading the rest of the research we know what this age group would like to see in music videos. For question 2 we saw that 70% of the people answering our survey was actually female so it's what this gender group likes in music videos.
Q3+4. Indie and Pop genre got the highest votes for this question which was 'What genre do you enjoy'. By Indie having one of the highest votes is a beneficial result as the band we will be making a music video of is of this Genre, Indie. Also, the specific song we have picked also has the rhythm of a Pop song. People also have us great feedback to of why the liked that genre such as how the bands are good life, and that the songs are catchy. Which is great as we have picked a good song by a band that are great live so we will include live performance.
Q5+6, 89% answered that they would watch most music videos on YouTube, which is the most accessible app there is as you can access it on your mobile phones and listen and watch is as if it is on your iPod. So we know after finishing our music video we will be able to share it online on YouTube. For question 6 there was a balanced feedback from our audience ranging around the 20%s of what people enjoy seeing in music videos, people enjoy all of the choices we set out, however narrative and fictional stories was still the highest vote, which narrative one of the highest is actually what we will be doing in our music video, so this question was good as we know our specific audience enjoy it.
Q7+8, 43% answered that they get attracted to the album when there are pictures of the band, unfortunately we are wanting to use other photography of landscapes or other subjects as our album, or if we get pictures from the live performance we will be going to of Bastille, people also answered they enjoy the colors which we will be able to do for our audience. People said that the colors they enjoy on the digipak are bright, we are wanting to use dark colors that are over saturated to get good dark reds etc.
Q9+10, we got some good feedback of what peoples favorite music videos were, varying in genre between Indie and Pop which was the most popular genre, but a lot of the music videos picked were ones we have researched, such as Bastille and Two Door Cinema Club, a total of 4 people said a bastille video that we will be styling our music video like, People also answered that they liked it when there is a similar theme between the music video and the digipak, such as similar colors and photography, which we have definitely planned to do for our music video and digipak.

Bastille Digipak

The main image shows the lead singer Dan running away along the road, the image has a rebellious feel to it matching the song title 'bad blood'. The lighting in the image is car lights focusing on him running. This image has a cinematic feel to it, the way the lighting is shows a dark mood towards it which reflects the mood of the music on the album. As it is Indie/Rock genre band the unique and different photo reflects this genre. The image has been manipulated, as it has a vignette effect, almost sepia because of the colours.
The lighting and colours are very subtle and surreal, as the image has been manipulated and edited. The colour of the image is almost just the lighting, as if what you would see out of the car window on a road at night time, how it would be pitch black around the roads. it is very shadowy and dark. As the image has been manipulated it seems it has a sepia effect, giving a brownly/red colour.
The text around the cover has a cinematic element to it. Because of the way it says 'Presents Bastille' and then the single name 'Bad Blood' as if it is a film being presented, then the way the text is layed out at the bottom showing the Record labels etc like the credits at bottom of a DVD cover of a film.

ONE REPUBLIC

STOP AND STARE

-Theme throughout video which links between life and death
- Introduction has a cinematic thriller feel to it, as it shows establishing shots of the location which is in a deserted area with shots between a fuzzing television, someone underwater in a bath and also the sound effects which are added (fly noises) (wind) which fits with a convention of a thriller film.
- This video has a narrative which is around someone being out of place, not in the right place of mind and also not ready for what life gives. A long with the theme of life and death which it shows throughout.
- Lyrics - 'One last appear for the life i leave' which in the video shows he is ready to move on now.
- Narrative also links to lyrics ' every glance is killing me' as he looks at his pregnant girlfriend which could suggest he isn't ready and is scared.
- in the theme of death there are quick cuts between him under water in a bath and his grave, and also when he is driving the car and he crashes into him, could be in his mind that he wants to die.

There is a really strong narrative to this music video, it is shot in cinemascope. The strong narrative is because of the main themes in the video which is life and death . It shows the main singer saying he isn't in the right place. This sends a message to many people who struggle with their lives and have a hard life and want to be in a different place.

Product placement is also in this video with a high street fashion company Lacoste which are shown every now and again, which would help with the marketting of the shoe. I did more research into the shoe being in the video, and I typed it in on google and it came up with many sources of people on yahoo answers etc asking for where to find these shoes because the famous singer is wearing them, which would help massively for marketing of Lacoste shoes.

Also, in another one republic video 'say all i need' also shows shots of the Lacoste shoes. Which is more product placement, with a similar shot as to the one in stop and stare.

Good life

- Uses the stop motion effect which is different sequences of images put together

Lyric meanings - ' oh this has gotta be a good life' which could be meaning that no matter how bad things are you have to get on with it. A message in the line saying that life is what you making, also that is what many researchers have interpreted about it.
The video keeps going within a frame of a photograph which could be a link to the lyrics and meaning showing memories and saying to be happy when things are bad.

It uses typical Indie Rock conventions of indie videos by showing the band perform.

Bastille

POMPEII

-          Starts with sounds from the city such as wind and car noises which gives atmosphere to the video
-          Shows name at the beginning of the song which helps with the marketing of the music video
-          Dark lighting throughout the video
-          Abandoned buildings which gives a sense of lonliness, also as he is alone fighting the evil in the video
-          Lyrics match the content
-          Lighting is mostly used by the main city lights
-          Handheld camera which matches his panic such as when he runs away
-          The drums in the song matches the tension in the video
-          Sound matches action

The songs title is ‘Pompeii’ and the video content reflects the title as Pompeii is an ancient city in western Italy, which was buried by a volcanic eruption which explains why all the buildings are abandoned in the video. Also the lyrics shows that the video is about a historic event ‘Grey clouds roll over the hills, bringing darkness from above’ ‘ The dust settled around us’ which is discussing the events of the day of the eruption. There are major contents in the video which match the lyrics and the whole story behind 'Pompeii Eruption' When the women's eyes turn black which is reflected the ash and how it took over peoples lives, its quite emotional and will be to the audience. As you see Dan running away from the problem, you reflect on how it would have been and how actually when there is an eruption that will wipe out a whole town there really is no where for you to run, which is why at the ending you see him with his eyes turning black. Also, the location is completely empty and shows why there is the noises of loneliness at the beginning of the video and also the abandoned videos, he is fighting it alone, in a complete ghost town of Pompeii. So overall, the lyrics match the content of the video, but after further research of what Pompeii is you see that the video has a strong narrative to it, telling a historic story of the past

LAURA PALMER

-          Documentary style to show normality
-          When focusing on the main singer who sings it uses set lighting and shows that, which shows a contrast between the run down location shown at the beginning. Showing he has the better life as a rock star
-          On the chorus the action matches the music with the strobe lights which are used
-          The lyrics match the content ‘terrifying, final frights’ as the actors in the video’s are wearing masks.
-          Switches to documentary digital style camera often
-          Set in quite a run down area

Dan the main singer from Bastille, Said he wrote 'Laura Palmer' based on an American tv serial drama
called 'Twin Peaks' which was created by David Lynch. Laura Palmer is a fictional character played by
Sheryl Lee. Dan states that it has a weird and eery atmosphere to it which he wanted to achieve
in the video. Bastille's basic explanation to why they wanted to do this song is because Dan is just
really interested in the tv series. The documentary style gives a cinematic feel to it. The eery feel of the
video comes with the locations and the props used, such as the masks that they wear and the run down town
that they are in, which may reflect the genre of the tv series 'Twin Peak' which is a Thriller.
